I was born in 1935, the deepest part of the Depression, and I have memories from age 2. We lived in a second-floor apartment across from the high school. I would go down the fire escape to the ground, sit on the stairs, and wait for my father to come home.
My father, a journeyman, a skilled worker, was selling fruit on the street. What he couldn’t sell he would bring home, and my mother would put up as jam. To his last days, he could not eat strawberries or strawberry jam. But I never knew about those bad days until much later, when I was in my teens. Then he could talk about it.
