I was deeply disturbed Friday afternoon by the televised Oval Office assault on Ukraine’s President Vlodymyr Zelensky. It smelled like a staged event starring DJT and JDV with Trump admitting as much when he quipped that the encounter would make great t.v. What he undoubtedly thought would be a macho display of his nationalistic toughness was a despicable degradation of the office of the President and a humiliation of the American public.
Trump’s credibility has never been reliable with one having to begin with the assumption that he’s lying and then work to discover where any truth might actually be hidden. However in this one event, he destroyed both the credibility of the nation and Americans in general.
It is clear that Trump stands firmly as Putin’s advocate in America. Knowing that, true Americans must speak for a nation that elected as its President a man who speaks only for himself and the interests of his billionaire buddies. It seems unlikely that the vox populi will arise from members of Congress. Some of them are stalwart members of the Trump cult. The majority are too timid to do anything but incoherently mumble. A few dozen, mostly Democrats, speak out boldly, but their voices are not heard far and wide.
Some good-hearted people are, one more time, trying to make excuses for the inexcusable because they cannot imagine a President could be so disgustingly unpatriotic and disrespectful of the rule of law. Others think Ukraine should capitulate to end the bloodshed. It’s the Chamberlain quest to pacify an enslaver by sacrificing a free and independent nation to enslavement. I heard one commentator say if Zelensky had not come on “so hot,” things might have turned out better – a naive and manipulative statement not recognizing the whole event as a setup from the start.
Perhaps the worst on-air comment was from an unnamed member of Congress who said Zelensky should have shown more deference to the president, echoing another commentator who said if only he had “bowed down” to Trump the way other heads of state have done. The office of the President of the United States deserves deferential respect from both visitors and the one who holds the office. Trump is a desecrating sacrilege demeaning the dignity of the office. He has forfeited whatever deference a President would normally be given. And he is not an ancient potentate before whom others must do obeisance.
Trump’s propaganda machine is in full force declaring Zelensky to be the villain. Dominating the airwaves and social media, they complain about the liberal legacy press censoring them when all the while they extol the virtues of an almost non-virtuous man. They proclaim his failures as glorious successes. They call his lies truth. And they call truth lies. They know what they’re doing. They have seen how entire nations can be misled, and they are doing just that.
This Oval Office show of contempt for the American way should motivate true patriotic Americans’ louder voices to proclaim truth with greater confidence and demonstrate without equivocation that this administration has no credibility and little public support.
